Mr. Lawal Garba FNIQS (Fellow
of Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors) , was born in Funtua,Katsina State on 16th December
1959 where he went to primary school at Aya Primary School. Thereafter
proceeded to Barewa College Zaria for his secondary school and continued to
School of Basics Studies after which he studied Quantity Surveying and
graduated with an honors degree all at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. He went
for his NYSC in Rivers State in 1979. Upon completion of his NYSC, the Governor
of Rivers State offered him to work under him on Projects Implementation
Committee. Lawal Garba has a world record as being the first graduate Quantity
Surveyor to set up the Property Cost Control section in the banking sector when
he moved to United Bank for Africa, it’s because of this achievement he
was conferred with the fellowship of Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors
FNIQS. and was on secondment to Tillyard Chartered Quantity Surveyors in London
from United Bank for Africa. He left the bank in 1985 to pursue private
business setting up Minsource Limited with his Chinese partner which became one
of the largest Cocoa beans exporters in Nigeria. In 1989 his company Emerald
Packaging Company bidded and won the one of the earliest privatization exercise
in the country by Odua Investment Limited in purchasing the majority shares and
took over the management of the the Cocoa Industry Limited which was
established by late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1967. His enterprises and
investments spanning over three decades is in various sectors of the economy.
These include Oil & Gas, Defence, Banking, Maritime, Property
Development/Investment and Energy sectors .He is the board Chairman with
controlling shares in the following companies: Quantilex Nigeria Limited,
Trobell International Nigeria Limited, Trobell Power and Energy Limited,
Trobell Fertiliser and Agro Allied Limited,Emerald Packaging Company Limited.
He’s married with three children and a philanthropist.
